Facebook activates Safety Check after bombing attacks on Yola, Nigeria

Facebook has activated the Safety Check feature after the terrorist attacks on Yola, Nigeria. Recently after the tragic mayhem in Paris, Facebook activated the Safety Check in the city to let people know if they were safe. Even though the feature has been immensely helpful for people in Parish, but Facebook had to face criticism for not launching the service for other attacks like that in Beirut. Hence, following the fatal bombings that occurred in Nigeria, Facebook has activated the service.

If you are not aware of Facebook’s safety Check service, then this is an introductory paragraph. This feature is started by Facebook at any emergency situation like natural disaster, terrorist attack, when people are in danger. With the help of Safety check, people can mark themselves as safe, if they are safe and the message goes in the form of notifications to their friends. Till now Facebook activated the service only during natural disasters, for e.g. during Nepal Earthquake of 2015.

“After the Paris attacks last week, we made the decision to use Safety Check for more tragic events like this going forward,” Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg wrote on his Facebook page. “We’re now working quickly to develop criteria for the new policy and determine when and how this service can be most useful.”

In response to the criticism for not activating Safety Check in Beirut and other places like that, Zuckerberg replied,”Until yesterday [the day of the Paris attacks], our policy was only to activate Safety Check for natural disasters”. he also added, “We just changed this and now plan to activate Safety Check for more human disasters going forward as well.”

“We care about all people equally, and we will work hard to help people suffering in as many of these situations as we can,” he said.
