Things You Should Not Do While Trying To Be a Stand-Up Comedian

Being a stand-up comedian is an excellent career opportunity. Being paid for making people laugh might not be as easy as it sounds. Many people think, it is a dream job, and all you need to do is make jokes and make the audience laugh. However, there are a lot of things you need to do to become a best comedian in India.

However, these things differ from one person to another. Therefore, what works for you, might not necessarily work for other person. Instead of telling you what to do, let us focus on things you should be avoiding. There are a set of rules, which you need to follow to achieve great success as a comedian.

Here is a list of things you should not do, if you are trying to be a stand-up comedian

  • Talking without knowing your audience
  • Annoy the audience
  • Not knowing when to stop

Knowing your audience

There are different kinds of people. What might be funny to some people can be offensive to others. You need to make jokes as per the audience you are entertaining. You cannot make adult jokes for the corporate event and work life ones for late night parties. If you were to entertain a teenage crowd, you cannot make them laugh with corporate funny stuff. They will not understand the jokes and you will bore them to death. In short, if your crowd does not get it, then it is not funny.

Do not annoy the crowd

Annoying the audience is the last thing you want to do. You need to learn to take the “boo” from them, and move onto the next bit. You might have awesome material, but you probably killed it at the last club with these same jokes. However, that does not mean that there is not going to be that one person, who does not like your stuff.

He or she is going to boo you, and that is the end of it. This does not mean you get de-motivated. You could keep clam, and just move on with a smile on your face.

Know when to stop

You may have awesome material, but that does not mean everyone will appreciate it. There are times, when the crowd is not into that particular mood or it might be that your joke was not good. If you are booed at, do not take it personally. Never get offended and ask the audience why they think that it was not funny.

Honestly, the crowd does not care about it. All they want is to hear something that is funny and helps them enjoy their time. Do not waste your time and make yourself look like an idiot. Learn from your past experience and do not repeat the same mistakes again.

Following these rules will not make you a great comedian, but it will certainly help you avoid some of mistakes you would have made otherwise.
