BlackBerry exiting from Pakistan after the Government demanded full access to their servers

BlackBerry is finally quitting all its operations in Pakistan. In July, Pakistan declared that BlackBerry will not be permitted to operate in the country unless BlackBerry provides full access to their servers. BlackBerry, however refused to do so as that would hamper customer’s security. The company was ready to cooperate with Pakistan’s Telecom regulatory authority and support them in fighting criminal activities but fetching unrestricted access to their servers were against their company ethics.

The company revealed that Pakistan Government wanted total control over their BlackBerry Enterprise Service traffic in the country. This would require to reveal the BBM chats and BES mails. Hence they decided to sever their operations of all sorts from the country.

Pakistan’s demand was not a question of public safety; we are more than happy to assist law enforcement agencies in investigations of criminal activity. Rather, Pakistan was essentially demanding unfettered access to all of our BES customers’ information.

As we have said many times, we do not support “back doors” granting open access to our customers’ information and have never done this anywhere in the world.
