How To Disable HEIC Format of Images in iOS 11?

HEIC is the acronym for High Efficiency Image File Format (HEIC). HEIC or HEIF file format is nothing but an image container format that can contain twice the amount of information stored in a JPEG image of the same size. So, HEIC photos save huge space in your iPhone. As we know that iPhones do not allow memory expansion, then it is obvious that Apple will work out a way to trade off this loss. Hence, the HEIC file format. The HEIC image format was developed by the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) and is defined by MPEG-H Part 12 (ISO/IEC 23008-12). As mentioned before, the efficiency of HEIC is twice that of a JPEG image. Moreover, it can contain high quality images. So the efficiency is manifold times, compared to that of a JPEG.

According to the definition of HEIF, it can also use Efficiency Video Codec (HEVC)-encoded intra images and HEVC-encoded image sequences in which inter prediction is applied in a restricted manner. iOS saves photos and videos in the HEIC format since the inception of iOS 11. Now that HEIF file formats are new and nacent, other platforms have not yet managed to gain full compatibility over the new format. Hence, users importing pictures from iOS 11 to other platforms like Android or Windows may find difficult but under certain circumstances.

Apple is one of the top technology juggernauts of the world. It is needless to say, that Apple has thought about this compatibility gap. Apple has an inbuilt HEIC to JPEG converter which can readily convert the HEIC images whenever you are sending or sharing the images over social media or email clients. If you are sending pictures from your iPhone using cloud services like One Drive or Google Drive, then the images will be shared in HEIC format.

Apple enables you to change the default save format from HEIC to JPEG. In this article I shall show you how to change this setting in iOS 11 and newer versions.

1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone. Scroll down and go to Camera Settings.

2. Now tap on Formats.

3. Under Camera Capture menu, you will find High Efficiency and Most Compatible menu. You can guess that the former option is for HEIC format while the latter one is for JPEG. So, choose the Most Compatible menu for saving your files in JPEG format.

That’s all
