Facebook Changed Its Company’s Name To “Meta”

Facebook has finally changed the name of its corporate company. The new name is Meta. By Facebook, we do not mean the social media app we use, but the company as a whole. Under Facebook, there are a plethora of other companies and services, such as, WhatsApp, Instagram, Oculus. Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook, has been talking about this since months. He said that the concept of Facebook was started with a social media application for people to connect, but is no longer limited to it. Facebook company plays a pivotal role in communication, business across the globe and emerged as a metaverse.

Zuckerberg has been emphasizing the term metaverse while drawing comparisons for Facebook.

Metaverse must be a new terminology to most of internet users. It is a fictional universe and virtual universe, made up of persistent, shared, 3D virtual spaces linked together forming the virtual universe. The concept is quite difficult, but as of now, you may think the virtual universe (universe of the internet) as metaverse. The name Meta has been coined from metaverse.

In the virtual event Connect, Mark Zuckerberg shared this big news with everyone. “We are a company that builds technology to connect,” Zuckerberg said. “Together, we can finally put people at the center of our technology. And together, we can unlock a massively bigger creator economy.”

“To reflect who we are and what we hope to build,” he added. The name Facebook no longer justifies the massive business it serves. “But over time, I hope we are seen as a metaverse company.”

Zuckerberg already owns the Twitter handle @meta. The website meta.com,  redirects to a welcome page on Facebook. This page talks about the changes being made to Meta. The site previously redirected to meta.org. It was a biomedical research discovery tool that was a project of the Chan Zuckerberg Science Initiative (joint project of Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan, his wife). Meta.org will be taken off on March 31, 2022.
