With internet being the most essential commodity used by this generation, everyday there is an increasing number of bloggers popping up contributing to any kind and amount of knowledge that they can impart via blogs and gain some fortune for it. And Search Optimization Engine or SEO plays a very important role in bringing up these blogs into notice. It is a process of determining the visibility of a blog or a site in a search engine’s unpaid results. Hence a blogger must familiarize oneself with SEO and several other terminologies that are related to it. In this piece of article, Tech Entice enrolls various such terms that are loosely or closely associated with SEO.

1. SEM:

SEM stands for Search Engine Marketing and as the name suggests, it integrates marketing with search engine. SEM is mainly based on mainly two aspects Search Engine Optimization or SEO and Pay Per Click or PPC. That is, SEM promotes the marketing of the sites either based on optimizing the web results on search engines by adjusting the web contents to achieve better position on priority scale on search engine result pages or by advertising through paid placements, contextual advertising and paid inclusions.

2. Backlink:

Also referred as inlink or inbound link, Backlinks are the links embedded in another website that redirects to the website the particular link refers to. One places the Backlink of one’s website at some other websites in order to enhance the page ranking of their site. The higher the page rank is, the greater is their chance to be more visible in the search results thereby gaining an increasing number of visitors.

3. Page Rank:

Page Rank is a link analysis algorithm used by Google which is used to assign a numerical weight on the sites under one big set of documents like the World Wide Web in order to determine their relative importance in that set. It determines the number of links to a page and also the status of the source of those links on the basis of which the weights are assigned to the documents.

4. Link bait:

Linkbait is an important feature that draws attention of others towards the link of a website. It helps enhancing one’s position in the search engine rankings by attracting as any backlinks as possible. Mostly it’s a textual post, but it is not restricted to that. It can also be a video, an image or a contest. A linkbait that sustains for long is mostly seen in quality content and it is used by bloggers or social media users to create awareness amongst other people regarding that site.

5. Link Farm:

Link Farm refers to a pool of sites that consists of hyperlinks to each other within the same pool. Link farm can be created manually or with the help of an automated program. With the increase in the number of sites in the group, increases the number of links thereby increasing the PageRank of the sites and earning instant visitors. Link Farm gives an environment to the sites to expose their healthy symbiotic nature.

6. Anchor Text:

Anchor Text is the visible text on the hyperlink that drives into the website. Anchor Text generally gives an idea about the content within that link in about 60 characters. An Anchor Text that consists of keyword rich content can catch the attention of Google more helping the site with the SEO as the words contained in it will help to determine the Page ranking received by search engines.

7. NoFollow:

NoFollow is a merit attributed to a link which signals Google that the hyperlink targeted should not influence its page ranking in the search results. Normally a user uses NoFollow if the site is created by him or if it is paid. When Google traces a NoFollow attribute assigned to a link, it does not count that link for the Page Ranking. This helps in eliminating the chance of search engine spam, thereby uplifting the trustworthiness of search engine results.

8. SERP:

SERP stands for Search Engine Results Page. On feeding the search engine with some query, the SERP provides with a list of results that match the query. These results include the title of the items, a reference to its complete version and a brief description highlighting the keywords that matched with the words entered in the query. The results will pop up on the page based on the page ranking of the sites inside the SERPs.

9. Sandbox:

Sandbox is Google’s security mechanism that keeps the unsecured websites away from the secured ones. It is a separate index where all the new websites enter first. While the sites are in the Sandbox, they won’t be available to the users through search engine queries. Once Google confirms the site’s legitimacy, it is shifted to the main index from the Sandbox to be viewed by the users through the search engine based on their page rankings.
